Terakoya House is a homestay in San Phi Suea, a residential neighbourhood behind the Ping River in Chiang Mai. The name comes from Japanese community learning houses where people gathered, learned, and connected.
Five rooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a raised wooden living platform, an ice bath, and outdoor spaces looking over a small farm. You can book one room, the main house, or the whole compound.

The one with the murals. Floor to ceiling hand painted artwork on the walls. Two single beds, attached bathroom, outdoor seating with garden views, fridge, desk, TV, AC.
Traditional Thai paintings on concrete walls. A golden dragon on one side, a classic triptych on the other. Two single beds, 43 inch TV, fridge, desk, shelf, attached bathroom.
Biggest room in the main house. Big workspace, bookshelves full of books, double bed, large TV, couch. Good for remote workers or longer stays. Private bathroom outside the room.
Separate two storey wooden house. Bedroom upstairs with coloured glass panels, natural light, desk, and balcony into the trees. Downstairs is a wooden deck with a hand carved swing.
Cosy room inside the main structure. Dark wood walls, floor cushion, lace curtains, small desk. Part office, part bedroom. Good for solo travellers who want something simple and quiet.

The centre of the house. Open to the breeze. Good for working, reading, yoga, or just sitting with coffee.
Wide open communal area with high ceilings and natural light. Connects all rooms and common areas.

San Phi Suea, a quiet residential neighbourhood behind the Ping River. 7-Eleven and the local market are walking distance. Old City, Central Festival, and the best restaurants are 15 to 20 minutes by car.
We stayed here for ten days and really enjoyed it. The room felt very natural, like a treehouse. The balcony was relaxed and comfortable, and the bed was very cozy. The shared kitchen was convenient, and there was plenty of space in the common areas. It's very quiet here, but a 7 to 10 min walk takes you to the town center with a daily afternoon market.
Wonderful getaway on the outskirts of Chiang Mai. A very peaceful complex with everything you need. The host was very friendly and helpful and went above and beyond to make the stay feel effortless. Highly recommended for those looking for some peace and quiet.
The first impression of the place and the comfort throughout the stay was so much better than other accommodations. A local market is within walking distance. WiFi speed is excellent, very quiet. Whatever you need, the host Sarath will do everything he can to help. Will definitely come back.
